We believe that a vendor who helps you make the right decision — even if that decision is to use a competitor — is more valuable long-term than one who oversells. So here is our honest assessment of when Metaustral is not the right choice.
1. You need complex governance workflows
If your organization requires multi-stage data approval workflows, fine-grained policy engines, automated data classification at scale, or integration with enterprise identity systems (LDAP, Active Directory SSO with advanced role hierarchies), Metaustral's current feature set may not match those needs. Platforms like Collibra or Alation are built specifically for this level of governance complexity.
2. You are deeply invested in the Hadoop ecosystem
Metaustral connects to SQL databases, Snowflake, Databricks, and BigQuery. If your core infrastructure runs on HDFS, Hive, HBase, or Spark on Hadoop, Apache Atlas — built natively for that stack — will offer tighter integration than Metaustral can today.
3. Column-level lineage from query logs is your top priority
Metaustral's lineage is manually defined — you draw the connections between assets. If you need automatic column-level lineage inferred from SQL query logs (knowing exactly which columns feed which downstream fields), tools like Select Star or DataHub's push-based model are better suited for that specific use case.
4. You have 500+ people working with data
Metaustral is designed for organizations where data governance is handled by a team, not a department. At very large scale — hundreds of data producers, thousands of assets, and multiple dedicated data governance officers — the feature depth of enterprise platforms may justify the investment and complexity they bring.
5. You need deep dbt or Airflow pipeline integration
If your data team is heavily pipeline-driven and wants automatic lineage and documentation pulled directly from dbt models or Airflow DAGs, platforms like Atlan or OpenMetadata have deeper native integrations for that workflow today. Metaustral focuses on database-level discovery rather than pipeline-level automation.
